With over two decades of environmental leadership, Stacy Smedley is committed to accelerating sustainability in the built environment through data-driven solutions and industry collaboration. Her career has spanned a diverse range of roles – from sustainability strategy and policy advocacy to hands-on project implementation – collaborating with leaders in the built environment to shape cutting-edge solutions for carbon reduction, sustainable design, and green building practices. Widely recognized for her ability to drive collaboration and innovation across sectors, Stacy has empowered organizations to achieve meaningful sustainability outcomes.

She currently serves as the Executive Director of Building Transparency, where she spearheads the development of innovative platforms like the Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3), an open-source platform that empowers architects, contractors, and industry stakeholders to make informed decisions about reducing carbon emissions in construction materials, and Tally, a whole building life cycle assessment tool.

Throughout her career, Stacy has been instrumental in advancing sustainable design and green building practices. Her remarkable career highlights include leading the first LEED for Homes Platinum-certified project in Washington State and the first project globally certified under Living Building Version 2.0 standards.

In addition to her leadership role at Building Transparency, she is a frequent speaker and advocate for sustainability in construction. She also sits on multiple advisory committees to promote harmonization and alignment to further positive impact in the green building market, including the GHG Protocol’s Scope 3 Technical Working Group, and has held numerous leadership roles, including Co-Chair of Washington Businesses for Climate Action, Advisory Board Member of the University of Washington Carbon Leadership Forum, Construction Taskforce Chair for the Embodied Carbon Network, Advisory Group Member for AIA Materials Working Group, and Emerging Professional Regional Chair for USGBC.

Stacy is passionate about fostering a collaborative, transparent approach to creating a more resilient and sustainable future for our industry and the planet. As a GNFZ Advisor, Stacy brings expert knowledge – particularly around Scope 3 accounting and embodied carbon – to help us continue to strengthen the platform and certification’s technical capabilities, as well as her experience as a deep collaborator to help us grow the GNFZ community working to accelerate a net zero future.
